Deterrents to reduce seal take from fishing nets

The Marine Management Organisation has undertaken research to look at reducing seal fish predation from nets using non-lethal methods. Static net fisheries in particular can be vulnerable, and seal take can lead to significant economic costs from loss of commercial catch, increased gear handling or gear damage. Seal-gear interactions can also lead to seal mortality through either legal shooting or as a result of accidental bycatch.
